The History of the San Fernando Cathedral
The iconic San Fernando Cathedral is a striking gothic revival structure located in downtown San Antonio. It’s one of the oldest churches in all of America, and it’s still in regular use to this day. Construction on the Roman Catholic cathedral was begun in 1738 by settlers from the Canary Islands, and the cathedral has remained at the very heart of the religious community in San Antonio ever since.
Over the decades, the church has remained as a constant amongst the fascinating history of the city. One of the most iconic historical events associated with San Antonio is the
Battle of the Alamo, and a critical part of the battle played out at the cathedral itself. It was from the tower of the cathedral that Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna raised the flag of “no quarter,” signaling the beginning of the battle to the Texians inside the Alamo.
Hauntings of the Iconic Cathedral
Given its history, it’s no surprise that the San Fernando Cathedral is considered to be one of the most haunted churches in America, along with being one of the oldest. As was tradition in some early churches, many of the past priests and parishioners were buried within the walls or beneath the floors of the church. Many believe this to be the source of sightings that include shadowy figures and spectral faces that appear suddenly in the walls of the cathedral.
The cathedral’s reported hauntings also coincide with those reported at the Alamo in several ways, including similar reports of ghostly monks roaming the grounds. In fact, during a restoration project that was completed in the 1930s, workers found bones and tattered military uniforms believed to have belonged to soldiers that died in the Battle of the Alamo.
